We are a family school in the heart of Madrid, and since 1971, have been offering a quality British education to children aged 2 to 18 from all over the world. 50 years of academic excellence. Our motto is Respect, Loyalty and Friendship and these words form the foundation of everything we believe in. We are known for our child-centred approach, happy atmosphere and high standards of achievement – our pupils outperform their UK and international counterparts in official examinations and also excel in sports and the arts.
Many schools call themselves a family school but this is 100% the case here at ISM. The school has grown and developed like a family since 1971. The owners attended the school as children and now 8 children from the family are at the school. This family focus is not profit but the creation of a learning environment where students can thrive. Management decisions are solely focused on what is best for the learners in the school, not corporate offices nor investors demanding a return. Staff tenure is 10 years, staff come here and they stay. Children stay in the school too which creates a stable and supportive environment.
The extension of ISM being a settled, family school is that each child is known as an individual and their pathway to succeed, whatever it may be, is known and celebrated. Staff meet and greet each child by name as they arrive in the morning and depart in the afternoon. Our families also stay in the school. The recent parent satisfaction survey had a 50% participation rate with 92.2% satisfied or very satisfied with the quality of education and 97% feeling their child is safe and happy in school.
We follow the English National Curriculum throughout, in parallel with 20% for Spanish studies (Spanish language & literature and humanities). This means that students can validate their studies with the Spanish system and that all of our pupils have the opportunity to learn Spanish and English to a native level.
Students complete the IGCSE programme in Years 10–11 and then undertake A-Level studies in Years 12–13. Our unique mix of Advanced Level British and Spanish subjects in these final years mean that our students leave prepared to enter British, US and Spanish universities, as well as those from across the world. Our students achieve highly, with 100% usually going on to attend university at 18. Our students have been awarded 112 Outstanding Cambridge Learner Awards, in recognition of their phenomenal exam results and making us one of the most successful centres in Spain. The school's strength is its longevity. We are a founding member of NABSS, the association of 80+ British Schools in Spain. Our growth has also been considered and effectively managed and never with profit as a driver. We have grown and succeeded along with our families and our students leave us to the best universities in the world. Oxbridge, Russell Group, Ivy League and the best universities in Spain and the EU.
As a British school, we employ highly qualified, native-speaking teachers who provide an education to pupils just as if they were in a school in the UK. We encourage children in active rather than passive learning. No amount of book learning can make up for an equal period of first-hand experience. Our theme is not 'I teach, you learn'. No! We prefer 'We are all here together to learn from each other'.
We recognise that each student is unique and care passionately about their social and moral development. We are committed to providing the best possible start in life for every one of our pupils. Therefore, even more important than their academic success, we are proud of how well our students behave and of the good adults that they grow up to become.
